Pilates Konnected – Paradise Point – Review by Jacinta Callaghan – Womens Nutritional Doctor

If you are considering trying Pilates, then Pilates Konnected at Paradise Point is the best place to start and learn reformer Pilates on the Gold Coast.

So many positives to talk about – first of all is the ease of location and available.  Located in the best part of Paradise Point, with easy parking and access and class times tailored to your availability. The studio is stylish and immaculate with reformer machines placed for ease of use and access. Kristina, also owns and operates an equally awesome studio at Paradise Waters.

Kristina at Pilates Konnected shows attention to detail, not just in the presentation or her studios but most importantly to how she teaches Pilates, ensuring that the clients get the best outcomes.

At the first visit she explains how it works then she will lead you through a private introductory session to familiarise you with the basics of Pilates and the importance of using correct posture and position. This is then backed up at every session where she will ensure that you are doing the moves in the most effective and safe way and to get the best outcomes.

I have had the pleasure and advantage of being able to attend her classes both personal and private for about 18 months now and the changes to posture and body shape have been notable and noticed by others. I am really happy with the positive changes I have been able to achieve with her help.

Kristina is always warm and welcoming and there is not a session that passes that we don’t have a smile and laugh.  The group classes are a time also of sharing and helping each of us to master an exercise or move.

Pilates has become part of my health routine and this studio and Kristina have made it something to look forward to.  Some days I may struggle to get up, but I always feel great after.

What is Nutrigenomics?

Nutrigenomics is a researched science based application of  nutritional medicine to modify genetic expression.

DNA testing will analyse which genetic SNP’s you have and as a result how the biochemistry of your body may be working less efficiently and to what degree.  We can then establish where the other factors of your life and health have affected or been effected and what nutrients and dietary interventions will offset these polymorphisms.

The food we eat not only  provides nutrition and fuel for the body, but food components such as also have the ability to switch genes on and off. Specific dietary interventions can be used to improve outcomes for your health.

The benefit of approaching it in this way is that we are addressing the specific issues from the “root cause” and by improving the gene expression, rather than “symptomatically” with the band-aid approach.

DNA testing looks at genes, specifically those  that have been specifically associated with Inflammation, Oxidative Stress, Methylation, Detoxification and Vitamin receptors.

What is the process?

Nutrigenomics testing is so easy to do. A saliva sample from a home cheek swab is all that is needed to get enough DNA.  DNA kits can be posted anywhere with easy to follow instructions.

Once received by the lab, results are returned to the clinic in 2 weeks. You can then book a consultation to explain your DNA results and implement the nutritional and lifestyle interventions to change gene expression for the better, better, best.

Consultations can be in clinic on the Gold Coast or Brisbane, or via skype for interstate, overseas or time poor clients.

What is Microbiome Testing?

We have billions of bacteria living in our gut that produce chemicals, hormones, amino acids, vitamins and other components which are utilised by the body to maintain health every second of the day and night.

Alterations to the distribution, types and ratios within the microflora in the gut, can lead to multiple health problems and produce symptoms in many different body organs. As more and more research is done it becomes clear that the state of the microbiome is the base underlying instigator and the fall guy when things are not ideal elsewhere.  It’s can be a  vicious circle … we need to address the microbiome as an integral part of the whole picture.

We can now perform microbiome testing of the gut to establish a clear picture of the environment of the gut, being the gut microbiome. From there we can alter your diet and treatment to re-establish balance or maintain balance.

So what is microbiome testing …. and how does the testing work?

The extended Faecal microbiology performed by Bioscreen is far more comprehensive and useful than the CDSA or other tests used by most GP’s which only looks for abnormal bacteria and parasites that should not be found in the gut.

The testing we used is a specialist test that cultures and counts the bacteria that would normally be found in the gut – but most importantly it also looks at the ration that are needed  for a healthy gut microbiome.

Your body needs a variety of microbial metabolites to function effectively. When these metabolites are scarce, or alternatively, in excessive supply, body functions and processes are impacted and symptoms likely surface.

The test is an extensive investigation of the microbiome of the lower intestines/Gastrointestinal Tract, collected from a faecal sample. Microbes from your sample are grown and the presence and exact quantities of faecal bacteria, both aerobes and anaerobes, gram negative and gram positive bacteria and yeasts are identified.

If these individual sets of microbes are significantly outside the normal percentiles, representing an imbalance of the intestinal ecosystem, they can be specifically identified and then addressed. This imbalance has been evidenced in many disorders including Depresssion, Fibromyalgia, Parkinsons, Dementia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Autism, ADHD, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and inflammatory Bowel disease, as well as immune, mood and neurological disorders.
